Serpentine Drama

Summer Tour

While there are many drama groups in Shetland it is rare that any group tours to the more remote areas.  The Shetland Arts Trust published a drama strategy in 2001 which clearly stated a strong desire for theatre to be toured.  Serpentine were keen to ensure that all their productions toured outside of Lerwick.  They also aimed to meet another SAT drama strategy by encouraging new writing.

Serpentine Drama aims to encourage, facilitate and foster opportunities for the Shetland community to participate and experience theatres at all levels.  Their project involved new know how as it aimed to develop and transfer the skills of the group to the communities where they perform.  It was a pilot tour project for the group and involved the transfer of specialist technical and lighting expertise to the group from a local company.  It encourages the development of creative industries in the Northern Isles as well as directly assisting young people.

For the assistance with productions in Fair Isle and Unst, Serpentine Drama was awarded a Leader+ grant of £2,000.
